FACTS OF INTEREST

The scarlet macaw is one of the larger parrots. It lives in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America.
Macaws eat fruit, nuts, flowers and nectar. They are called seed predators: as they eat, they destroy seeds that would grow into new trees.
Macaws gather in small flocks to sleep. They can be heard quarreling for the best spots on the sleeping trees late into the night.
Scarlet macaws are endangered. Their forest habitat has been cut down and many have been captured for pets and feathers.
